Frequently Asked Questions
What Are Eyelash Extensions?
- Eyelash Extensions are a popular new service and product that lengthens and thickens a client’s own natural eyelashes. Lash Extensions are single strands of synthetic eyelashes that are curved to replicate a natural eyelash. They are applied to each individual natural eyelash one by one for a natural, beautiful and luscious look. Eyelash Extensions are perfect for special occasions or for day-to-day wear.
What do Eyelash Extensions look like when applied?
- With proper application, meaning one synthetic eyelash applied to one natural lash, the look and feel is completely natural looking and real. No one will know your clients have extensions. Everyone will just think your clients were born with beautiful, long lashes!
How long will it take to apply Eyelash Extensions and how is it done?
- The application process for lash extensions normally takes anywhere from 1 to 2 hours with someone who is experienced. A newly certified lash stylist may take up to 3 hours. Clients lay comfortably on a massage or facial table with their eyes closed. The lash stylist then applies an under-eye gel pad to cover the lower lashes. Extensions are then applied to each individual eyelash on a hair-by-hair basis. A special waterproof bonding agent is used. Glue does not contain any fumes or irritants and is long lasting.
Can clients choose the look they want?
- Eyelash extensions are available in a number of lengths and thicknesses. Lash stylists consult with clients first to see what type of style they are interested in. Stylists also determine what client’s lashes can hold in regards to size. Each person's lashes will vary in strength and length. Stylists take this into consideration when creating a look for their clients. The overall look of the lashes is very natural.
Can clients swim, shower, exercise, or visit a spa while wearing Eyelash Extensions?
- Yes. The bonding agent used is waterproof and allows clients to shower, swim, and exercise. Special care is required but overall maintenance is low. Clients should not wash their eye area for about 24 hours after the eyelash application.
Are Eyelash Extensions FDA approved? Is it safe?
- Currently the FDA is not regulating eyelash extensions because eyelash extensions are applied to the natural eyelash hairs and do not touch the skin. The application process is pain-free and so relaxing that most clients fall asleep during the procedure. However, improper application by an unqualified eyelash technician can cause damage to natural lashes.
How long will a set of Eyelash Extensions last?
- When applied properly, eyelash extensions will last the length of the natural growth cycle of your client’s eyelashes. The growth cycle is: Grow, Rest, Shed. This natural process happens daily and runs a full cycle every 90-120 days. Each client’s experience will differ based on day to day activities but over all touchups should only be required every 3 to 4 weeks.
How often should a client get touch-ups?
- Clients should get a touch up every 3 to 4 weeks. If they wait too long their eyelash extensions will fall out and they will require a full set. Natural eyelashes shed every day due to the natural growth cycle and are naturally replaced with the growth of a new eyelash. Other factors such as exposure to steam or frequently touching eyes may cause extensions to fall out sooner. A touch up is needed to fill in any lashes that have naturally shed. Touch ups average about 45 minutes.
Can clients apply mascara to Eyelash Extensions?
- Yes, even though mascara is not necessary since the extensions actually give the illusion of wearing mascara. Mascara can be worn, however mascara must only be water-based mascara. Clients MUST NOT USE OIL-BASED OR WATER-PROOF MASCARA. Waterproof mascara or any type of oil based mascara can dissolve the bonding agent and shorten the life of eyelash extensions causing them to fall sooner. Care also needs to be taken in washing off mascara. Only use a water based eye makeup remover.
What do clients do when they no longer want to wear Eyelash Extensions?
- Clients simply let Extensions shed off with their natural lashes. As the eyelashes shed, clients can begin applying mascara.
Can clients use eyelash curlers with Eyelash Extensions?
- No, clients should not use mechanical eyelash curlers on their eyelash extensions as these curlers will damage the extensions and possibly their own natural lashes.
What products (i.e. mascara or eyeliner) can be used in conjunction with Eyelash Extensions?
- Clients shouldn’t use products containing Glycols and Carbonates. Many mascaras, eyeliners and makeup removers contain these products and will compromise the lash bond. There are many types of cosmetic ingredients that act as solvents in product formulas. Examples found in mascara and make-up removers are: Polyethylene Glycols (PEG's) Propylene Glycols and Propylene Carbonates. Note: Butylene Glycol is not a solvent. It is a type of wax found in mascaras and does not dissolve adhesives. Clients should check ingredients carefully.
How should clients take care of their new Eyelash Extensions?
- Do not get lashes wet for 24/48 hours
- Avoid hot steam or saunas
- Avoid running water directly on lashes
- Do not rub eyes
- Only use water-based mascara
- If applying mascara, work from middle to tip, avoiding root area
- Use water-based eye makeup remover
- Do not use an eyelash curler
- Do not pull on lashes (this may cause natural lashes to come out prematurely)
- Avoid all eye makeup products created with glycol
